CITY COMMISSION SELECTS
NEW MUNICIPAL COURT JUDGE
GREAT FALLS, Montana – This afternoon the City Commission selected Steve Bolstad at the City’s new Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad will still need to be formally appointed by the City Commission at their next meeting on Tuesday, January 21, 2014. He will be replacing Judge Nancy Luth who will be retiring at the end of the month after a career spanning over twenty years as the Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad will serve until the next municipal general election, which will take place November 2015.
Bolstad is a Great Falls native and is currently a criminal prosecutor for Cascade County and has served as Deputy County Attorney for over ten years. He has experience prosecuting everything from misdemeanors to complex homicide cases. While at the Cascade County Attorney’s Office, he also worked as a County Civil Attorney, addressing liability for the County and enforcing various County codes. He has a Juris Doctor from the University of Montana and a Bachelor of Arts from Montana State University.
In addition to his work experience, Bolstad is also very active in the community. He has taught high school, coached multiple sports and is an avid civic volunteer. He was a member of Great Falls Neighborhood Council #8, currently sits on the Pre-Release Board of Directors, as well as the Community Building Steering Committee with NeighborWorks and is a Boys and Girls Football Coach.
His salary will be negotiated prior to appointment. The Municipal Court Judge’s salary is set by City resolution and depending on experience and qualifications can range from the low $80,000s to mid $90,000s.
When asked about the selection Commissioner Bronson had this to say, “We interviewed four exceptional candidates, but out of that group Steve was considered the best of the best. The Commission believes that he will be an outstanding Municipal Court Judge.”
