    The Great Falls Public Library is hosting Civil War 150: Exploring the War & Its Meaning through the Words of Those Who Lived It, a national traveling exhibition, on display May 26 – June 16. Utilizing letters, personal accounts, and images drawn from the Gilder Lehrman Collection, this exhibition traces major events during the Civil War through the eyes of soldiers, presidents, freedmen, and families.

This program is free and open to the public. Each month the Library will show three TED Talks videos featuring experts in their fields sharing cutting edge ideas, innovation, and progressive ways of applying expertise for the betterment of society.

    The Library’s Youth Services Department is hosting a party on Friday, March 14, from 4:00 – 5:45 pm. This party is geared towards children kindergarten through 3rd grade accompanied by a parent of guardian. Youth Services Librarian Nola Huey will read the five picture books nominated for the 2014 Montana Treasure State Picture Book Award. After hearing the five stories, children can then vote for their favorite. In order to vote, however, children must listen to all five stories. This year’s nominees are Hanging of Jefferson’s Nose, Larf, The Lonely Book, Three Ninja Pigs, and Jangles.

    The Library is presenting a four-part series of free of computer classes on Mondays in February & March from 6:00 – 7:30 pm. This series, Computer Basics: The Second Step, is for those wishing to move beyond basics. All classes will be held on the second floor of the library. People attending the classes must arrive at the library before 6 p.m. Register by calling the library at 453-0349 or stopping in at the 2nd floor Information Desk.

    City offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. In addition the Great Falls Public Library and Great Falls Animal Shelter will be closed. There will be no changes to the residential or commercial sanitation collection schedule next week. The Community Recreation Center and the Natatorium will be open on Monday.

    The Great Falls Public Library is now offering book discussion kits for checkout.  These kits contain 10 books per kit, along with discussion guides and information on starting and maintaining book discussion groups and clubs. The kits may be checked out for 45 days, with renewal if needed. Currently, the library has 14 titles for checkout.  As the kits grow in popularity, additional titles may be added.

    The Great Falls Public Library celebrates Banned Books Week (September 22 – 28) with a unique sculpture; the eight-foot tall mixed media sculpture, complete with torn and burned pages, is composed of 29 banned and challenged books.  Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and draws national attention to the harms of censorship. The books featured during Banned Books Week have all been targeted with removal or restrictions in libraries and schools.

    The Library is hosting a book talk on Tuesday, September 10, from Noon to 1:30 pm with Phillipsburg author Anne Krickel and her sisters Francie Berg of North Dakota, and Jeanie Thiessen, of Los Angeles.  The three sisters will share ranching stories from their new book Montana Stirrups, Sage, and Shenanigans: Western Ranch Life in a Forgotten Era.
