    The Great Falls Public Library will be hosting TED Talks starting on Thursday, January 16, at 7 p.m. and will continue on the third Thursday of each month.  Each month the library will show three TED Talks videos followed by lively discussion. TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.

    The Shelter has placed a “Caring Paws for the Cause” giving tree at Petcetra (1525 10th Avenue South) to benefit the animals at the Great Falls Animal Shelter. Items included on the tree are from the Shelter’s Wish List. Items can be returned directly to the donation collection box at Petcetra or taken to the Shelter.

During the public hearing, members of the public are encouraged to offer comments and ideas on community issues that may be addressed with CDBG and Home Partnership Investment Program (HOME) funds.

    The Honorable Dirk Sandefur will be performing the swearing in ceremony for Mayor-Elect Michael J. Winters, Commissioners-Elect Fred Burow, Bob Jones and Bob Kelly, as well as several Neighborhood Council representatives, in the Civic Center (2 Park Drive S), Commission Chambers Room 206. The Great Falls City Commission work session will immediately follow the swearing in ceremony.

    After serving thirty years in municipal law at the City of Great Falls, Judge Nancy Luth is announcing her retirement at the end of January 2014. Judge Luth started her career at the City in 1984 as the Assistant City Attorney and was appointed to serve out the previous Judge’s term in 1990. She was elected City Court Judge in 1991. Judge Luth has been responsible for managing the third busiest municipal court in the state. She has been responsible for hearing all of the City’s cases and managing a staff of seven. It is has been her job to keep the office organized, well run, streamlined and to “keep the wheels on the train.”

Starting at approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning the southwest area of the City began experiencing sporadic power outages.  The outage was caused by extreme cold temperatures.  Recognizing the severity of the issue, Northwestern Energy worked to bring power back on soon as possible.

    Starting at approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning (Saturday, December 7) the City of Great Falls began experiencing sporadic power outages affecting the southwest areas of town. Recognizing the severity of the issue, Northwestern Energy is working to bring power back on soon as possible. Residents are asked to shelter in place if possible, find shelter with family and friends who have heat and for those who need assistance a temporary mass care facility has been set-up at the Pacific Steel Arena (Four Seasons Arena).

    As of 8:30 a.m. this morning the City of Great Falls continues to experience sporadic power outages in southwest portions  town.  The outage is due to the extreme cold temperatures.  Northwestern Energy is actively working on bringing power back as soon as possible. If the outage is prolonged and becomes more serious, public officials will notify residents in the affected areas of a recommended course of action.

    The Montana Municipal Interlocal Authority (MMIA) awarded the 2013 Bob Worthington Risk Management Achievement Award to the City of Great Falls. MMIA specifically recognized Angela Swingley, Risk Manager, and Mark Willmarth, Training and Development Coordinator, for their dedication to addressing both workers’ compensation and liability issues. Kudos to Mark and Angela for a job well done!

    Help us empty the Great Falls Animal Shelter on Giving Tuesday! On Tuesday, December 3, from noon to 5:30 p.m. potential adopters can help empty the shelter by naming their own price (minimum of $5) for adoption fees. There will also be a bake sale, a raffle every hour, items for sale and free cocoa starting at 10 a.m. All proceeds go towards the cattery and other facility improvements.

    As part of the community’s annual holiday celebration, City staff removed a 40’ Blue Spruce on Friday, November 22, and placed it in front of the Civic Center.  Natural Resource staff will finish placing the lights on the tree this week and it will be lit at the Parade of Lights finale scheduled for Saturday, November 30,  at 6 p.m.  The tree will remain on display throughout the holiday season.

    City offices including the Great Falls Public Library, Community Recreation Center and the Great Falls Animal Shelter will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 28 and 29, for the Thanksgiving holiday. There will be no residential sanitation collection on Thanksgiving Day and garbage collection will be one day later than the regular schedule for customers on Thursday and Friday.

    The annual Canned Food Day in City Court is Friday, December 6, 2013, from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. During this event, defendants who are making monthly payments on fines have the option of bringing in canned food in lieu of December’s payment. For every 10 non-perishable food items donated, $50 will be credited towards their total fines owed.
