    Change a pet’s life by providing them a forever home. Tuesday, January 21, through Friday, January 31, shelter pets that are 6 months and older can be adopted for only $25. The adoption fee includes a rabies shot, vaccinations and the cost of spaying/neutering your new pet. Existing pet owners, who are interested in adopting, are asked to bring proof of rabies vaccinations for their current pets.

    City offices will be closed on Monday, January 20, in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday. In addition the Great Falls Public Library and Great Falls Animal Shelter will be closed. There will be no changes to the residential or commercial sanitation collection schedule next week. The Community Recreation Center and the Natatorium will be open on Monday.

    Ahoy, me hearties! A night of seamen, secrets and scallywags await at the Great Falls Animal Shelter’s Second Annual Murder Mystery Party!  “Murder Among the Mateys,” a night of intrigue and pirating good fun, is being held on Saturday, March 1, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Eagles Lodge (1501 9th Street S). The evening includes a silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and beverages. A no host bar will also be available. The cost is $25 for those playing a character and $45 per character couple. Those not playing a character for the evening can attend for $20.

    The City of Great Falls, Cascade County and the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) have initiated a community transportation planning process to update their existing Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP). The Plan provides a blueprint for guiding transportation infrastructure investments based on identified needs. The third and final informational meeting will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2014 in Great Falls at the Civic Center, Missouri Room, 2 Park Drive South at 6 p.m.

    The City Commission selected Steve Bolstad at the City’s new Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad must be formally appointed by the City Commission. He will be replacing Judge Nancy Luth who will be retiring at the end of the month after a career spanning over twenty years as the Municipal Court Judge. Bolstad will serve until the next municipal general election in 2015.

    The Great Falls Public Library is now offering book discussion kits for checkout.  These kits contain 10 books per kit, along with discussion guides and information on starting and maintaining book discussion groups and clubs. The kits may be checked out for 45 days, with renewal if needed. Currently, the library has 14 titles for checkout.  As the kits grow in popularity, additional titles may be added.

    This City is currently seeking applicants for municipal court judge. The position is being vacated by Judge Nancy Luth, who will be retiring at the end of January 2014. Interest forms and resumes are due to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 3, and are available online or in the City Clerk and City Manager’s Offices. The City Commission will be interviewing the top candidates individually at an open meeting and anticipate having an appointment made by the end of January.

TED is a nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading.

    After serving thirty years in municipal law at the City of Great Falls, Judge Nancy Luth is announcing her retirement at the end of January 2014. Judge Luth started her career at the City in 1984 as the Assistant City Attorney and was appointed to serve out the previous Judge’s term in 1990. She was elected City Court Judge in 1991. Judge Luth has been responsible for managing the third busiest municipal court in the state. She has been responsible for hearing all of the City’s cases and managing a staff of seven. It is has been her job to keep the office organized, well run, streamlined and to “keep the wheels on the train.”

    As of 12 p.m. this afternoon, power was restored to the southwest area of Great Falls. Starting at approximately 3:30 a.m. this morning the southwest area of the City began experiencing sporadic power outages.  The outage was caused by extreme cold temperatures.  Recognizing the severity of the issue, Northwestern Energy worked to bring power back on soon as possible.
