Sign Code Enforcement

Signs are an important form of advertising, but without rules and guidelines for their use, signs can make a community look cluttered and unappealing. In an effort to get control of the look of our community, the Great Falls City Commission adopted a new sign code.

This page contains links to sign related forms and a list of frequently asked questions. For more information related to signs, contact:

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to get a permit before I put up a sign?
Yes. Most signs need a permit. There are exemptions for political/public and other types of temporary community event signs, but if you are putting up a sign for a business or replacing an existing sign, it needs a permit.
How do I get a permit for a sign?
The sign permit application can be downloaded above, or you can come down to the Civic Center, room #112, Community Development and pick one up.
How long do I have to wait to get a permit?
In most cases the permit is approved in less than 1 day.
I just want to hang a banner up and advertise my poker tournament. Do I need a permit?
Yes. The permit for temporary banners can be found above. Temporary banners are any sign you put out on your property that were not permitted previously and are temporary (sandwich boards, large inflatable, 10 foot plastic banners tied to posts, etc.)
