Great Falls Weed and Seed

Neighbors working together to make Great Falls a safe, viable and livable community.

Great Falls Weed and Seed (GFWS) is a Department of Justice program that serves as a catalyst to make Great Falls lower northside and Black Eagle safe, economically viable and livable neighborhoods. Weed and Seed is the U.S. Department of Justice Community Capacity Office’s flagship program, a holistic collaborative approach to law enforcement, crime prevention and community revitalization.

In Great Falls, the Weed and Seed site encompasses the lower north side, from Central Avenue to the river and east to 38th Street. It also includes Black Eagle and the eastern most portion of Riverview, near North Middle School. The Lower Northside/ Black Eagle site is the second site in Great Falls and the only one in Montana. Currently, there are 217 Weed and Seed sites nationwide and 88 graduated sites.

GFWS is governed by a Steering Committee, a public-private partnership of city, county and federal agencies, as well as human service organizations and area residents. Agency members include the city and county commissions, Great Falls Police Department, Cascade County Sheriff, NeighborWorks, Department of Justice, Great Falls School District, Alliance for Youth, Great Falls Transit, Great Falls Housing Authority, area faith based organizations, the Neighborhood and Youth Councils, Neighborhood Watch and others.

The program "weeds" out violent crime, gang activity, drug use and drug trafficking and then "seeds" the area’s neighborhoods through social and economic revitalization. The Steering Committee implements its mission through contracts with local agencies. Our mission and strategies support:

  • Law Enforcement and Community Policing
  • Prevention, Intervention and Treatment and
  • Neighborhood Revitalization

Limited funding is available to develop and execute programs that address these strategies, in turn fostering local leadership to sustain those solutions. For more information on the Weed and Seed program, please contact Carol Bronson, Site Director:
