Great Falls, Montana – The 2013 Official City of Great Falls holiday ornament has been selected.  This year’s ornament features the Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art and is designed by local artist Sheree Nelson. The ornaments will be available for purchase beginning next month.

Paris Gibson Square Museum of Art is among the first buildings in Great Falls to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was built in 1896 and originally served as Great Falls Central High School and later as Paris Gibson Junior High School.   It has provided a vital center for the arts as Paris Gibson Square since the late 1970’s.

This ornament is the sixth in a series featuring significant Great Falls historic resources.  Having an official City of Great Falls ornament began in 2008 by resolution of the City of Great Falls Commission.

Proceeds from the ornament sales provide funding for the Great Falls-Cascade County Historic Preservation Advisory Commission to be used for preservation education programs, such as downtown revitalization workshops, production of the popular walking tour brochures, preservation awards and matching funds for grants.

The first ornament, in 2008, featured the Civic Center and marked the 75th anniversary of the New Deal, of which the Civic Center was a project.  Since then, ornaments have celebrated the Vinegar Jones Cabin, Great Falls’ first permanent residence; the Great Northern Depot, now Energy West; the Ursuline Centre and Great Falls High School.
