Captain of Investigative Bureau

Captain John Schaffer supervises the Investigative (Detective) Bureau, which consists of 23 sworn officers and 1 civilian.

Captain Schaffer has been with the GFPD since 1998 and supervises the Investigative Services (Detective) Bureau. Prior to joining the GFPD, he served 9 years with the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department in Bismarck, ND.  He is a graduate of the Minot State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice.  He is also a 2014 graduate of the FBI's National Academy Session 258, in Quantico VA.

Captain Schaffer has worked in the Patrol Bureau as the Swing Shift sergeant and then as a lieutenant (team commander). He served in the Support Bureau as the training sergeant, as well as in the Investigative Bureau as both a general case investigator and as a Special Victims Unit (SVU) detective.

Captain Schaffer has been a department firearms instructor for 16 years and has provided instruction in other areas, to include: Instructor Development, Law Enforcement’s Response to Autism, Verbal Tactics, PTSD/Stress Management and Active Shooter. He also teaches leadership training at the Montana Law Enforcement Academy’s Montana Executive Leadership Institute.
