Neighbors working together to make Great Falls a safe, viable, and livable community

"Weed and Seed" is a community revitalization strategy, created by the U.S. Department of Justice, which encourages communities to 'weed out' violent crime, gang activity, drug use, and drug trafficking and 'seed' the area’s neighborhoods through social and economic revitalization, as well as programs that foster local leadership to sustain these solutions. Federally designated in 2002, Great Falls Weed and Seed is one of only two Weed and Seed sites designated in Montana (the other site was on the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in Lame Deer, MT).

Great Falls Weed and Seed serves as a catalyst to connect people, resources and organizations to build safe, vibrant and livable neighborhoods in historic Great Falls and Black Eagle. This flagship program takes a holistic, collaborative approach to community policing, crime prevention and community revitalization.

GFWS is governed by a Steering Committee, a public-private partnership of city, county and federal agencies, as well as human service organizations and area residents. The Steering Committee’s large and diverse membership includes the city and county commissions, Great Falls Police Department, Cascade County Sheriff, NeighborWorks, U.S Attorney for the state of Montana, Cascade County Attorney’s office, Great Falls School District, Alliance for Youth, Great Falls Transit, Great Falls Housing Authority, faith based organizations, the Neighborhood and Youth Councils, Neighborhood Watch and others.

The Steering Committee sets the programmatic goals for Great Falls Weed and Seed; NeighborWorks Great Falls is our fiscal agent. Each year, the Steering Committee collaborates, in a way that no other agency in Cascade County can, to identify unmet neighborhood needs and gaps in service in our target neighborhoods. Through contracts and the work of the Site Director, GFWS provides funding and technical assistance to residents and agencies that are working to alleviate those gaps in service.
