Captain John Schaffer supervises the Investigative (Detective) Bureau, which consists of 20 sworn officers and 3 civilians.
Captain Schaffer has been with the Great Falls Police Department since 1998. Prior to that time he served 9 years with the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Office in Bismarck, ND. He is a graduate of the Minot State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice and is currently working on his Masters at the University of Great Falls.
Prior to his appointment to the Investigative Bureau, Captain Schaffer served as a Lieutenant in the Patrol Bureau. Captain Schaffer has worked in all bureaus of GFPD as the Training Sergeant and the Swing Shift Sergeant. He has also served as both a general case investigator and Special Victims Detective.
Captain Schaffer has been a department firearms instructor for 15 years and has provided instruction in other areas to include Instructor Development, Law Enforcement’s Response to Autism, Verbal Tactics and Active Shooter.
