Meeting: Great Falls Symphony: A Sea Symphony
Location: Mansfield Theater
On April 26, the orchestra and choir will come together to perform A Sea Symphony by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Written in the first decade of the 20th century, it is one of the first symphonies in which a choir is used throughout the work and is an integral part of the musical texture.Poems from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass is the source of the text. The work portrays the mystery, immensity, power and grandeur of the sea. Whitman’s emphasis on the brotherhood of man comes through, too. “The work reminds us to respect the sea for its power,” says Johnson. The people in coastal areas who lived through the effects of Hurricanes Sandy and Katrina need no such reminder.
