    Nominations are now open for the sixth Paris Gibson Award, named for the founder of Great Falls. This award was established by the Paris Gibson Month Celebration Committee to honor a citizen who embodies the vision and excellence of City Founder Paris Gibson. Those nominated should be a long standing resident of Great Falls, excel in his/her area of expertise, have contributed to the betterment of Great Falls and be innovative and creative in his/her service to the community. Nomination forms are available at the Great Falls Park & Recreation Department or online.  Deadline is Friday, June 5, 2015.

    The 36th Annual Ice Breaker Road Race will be held Sunday, April 26, 2015.  Join close to 4,000 runners, joggers and fitness walkers who enter the race each year.  The five-mile road race offers a competitive format and the three-mile run offers both a competitive and recreational format. Early registration ends Saturday, April 18.  Register Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Park and Recreation office (1700 River Drive N) or on-line at www.icebreakergf.com.

Managers can pick up registration material at the Park and Recreation Office (1700 River Drive N.) Divisions include:  Men’s, Men’s Doubleheaders, Women’s and Coed. League play is scheduled to begin on Monday, April 27th.

    This summer Park and Recreation will be offering online registration for their summer programs, starting Monday, April 20!  The online system will allow households to register for camps, swim lessons, golf lessons, etc., online.  Information that will be required to register include names of family members, birthdates, address, phone number, and a valid email address.  Park and Recreation staff strongly suggests that you call 771-1265 prior to April 20, to set up your online account.

    The City’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt is Saturday, April 4, at 11 a.m. the south end of Gibson Park. It's always fun no matter the weather!  The Hunt will feature over 5,000 eggs filled with candy and special prizes. In addition, there will be special treats for all participants.  The Easter Egg Hunt age divisions include:  1-3, 4-6 and 7-9. The Easter Bunny will be making a guest appearance so don’t forget your basket!

    Anaconda Hills Golf Course and driving range will open for the season at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 1.  The gates and pro shop open at 8:30 a.m. to schedule tee times.  Tee times can be made two days in advance by calling either pro shop; Anaconda Hills, 761-8459 or Eagle Falls, 761-1078 (9:30 a.m. through March 31, 8:30 a.m. beginning April 1).  The course will be open daily, weather permitting.  Use of carts will be determined based on current conditions and will be evaluated on a daily basis.

    Park & Recreation is now  offering adult golf lessons.  Classes focus on individual attention, video error correction and touches on long and short game fundamentals for beginners, with specialized shots made available to the more advanced students.  Classes are offered Monday-Saturday (excluding Friday) for 5 classes, starting March 16th or March 23rd. Fee to register is $75.     Eagle Falls Golf Club is now open to the public for cross country skiing and snowshoeing.  Hours are Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.   The road is not plowed so guests should plan accordingly.  The rules and the course map will be posted at the gate as well as an open/closed sign.  There is no charge to ski or snowshoe.

    It’s time to get your teams signed up for the 2015 City League Adult Basketball season.  Registration will begin on Monday, December 1, and continue through Monday, January 12, 2015.  Teams are registered on a first come/first served basis.  Team managers can register at the Park and Recreation office, 1700 River Drive North, 8 am- 5  pm. Men’s and Women’s leagues are offered.

    Each holiday season the Forestry Division provides the Christmas tree that is placed in front of the Civic Center. This year the 40-foot spruce tree will be moved to the Civic Center on Friday, November 21, between 8 am-12 p.m. In order to allow room for the flat bed trailer to move the tree all vehicles from 2nd Avenue North, starting at 38th Street to 9th Street, should be moved off the street on Friday morning. The Christmas tree will be lit for the first time on Saturday, November, 29 as part of the Parade of Lights.

    Due to the snow and cold temperatures the City of Great Falls Forestry Division will not be picking up leaves on Monday and Tuesday.  With the cold temperatures snow is not melting and it is impossible for homeowners to rake leaves. Leaf pick up was scheduled to be completed on Tuesday, however, in areas where the leaves have not been raked or picked up, residents are being asked to bag the leaves and put them out by garbage containers for pickup.

    The City of Great Falls is pleased to announce that Joseph Petrella will be joining the City as the new Park and Recreation Director. Joseph comes to Great Falls from Alexandria, Virginia, where he currently serves as the Division Chief for Recreation Services. Joseph has a broad background in recreation management with over sixteen years of experience. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Connecticut and a Master of Science in Recreation Management from the University of Illinois. He is a Certified Park and Recreation Executive (CPRE) through the National Recreation and Park Association.

    The City's Leaf Pickup Program begins next week Monday, October 27 through Tuesday, November 18. Residents within the Boulevard District area are being requested to deposit leaves on the boulevard next to the curb and not in the street gutter. For those residing within the Boulevard District, the Natural Resources Division will vacuum leaves from the boulevards. The City's Street Division will be sweeping streets in conjunction with the leaf pick-up.
